Let's start with introductions: I'm Ms. Marshall while I am at school, and outside of school I am Mom, or Heather. I have two daughters, Sasha and Kacie. Kacie is an 8th grader and a basketball player. Sasha is an 11th grader and a volleyball player. They both go to school in Martinez. This is my 4th year teaching 6th grade English and History. Before that I taught second grade at Rodeo Hills for many years. I have been teaching for 16 years, which means I am kind of old, but I haven't forgotten how to have fun. I love figuring out new ways to make learning fun. I love playing games, singing, dancing, making movies, and anything else that keeps the classroom lively and loud.
When I'm not busy being a teacher I like to read, go camping, swim, ride bikes, go to movies...the usual stuff. I am crazy about Star Wars and I have a light saber. I like making videos about stories using puppets or stop motion animation. My favorite sport is trampoline dodge ball.
I'm excited about the opportunity to get to know you and try out some new things this year. The first new thing I'd like to try out is using a blog instead of the traditional composition books to record our thinking and learning. We will read Greek mythology, food labels, instructions for games, blog posts, novels, picture books, articles, poems, and anything else that we can think of. I will read to you, you will read to me, you will read with each other, you will read to yourself, we will read altogether, and we will talk about and write about our reading.
I would like it if you would respond to this post and tell me a little about yourself.
Check out this video made by a group of middle school students about how much they honestly like big books:
